How Many Words Should You Write?

On this page

The minimum lengths are 150 words for Task 1 and 250 words for Task 2. These are minimums, not targets you need to exceed by a large margin. IELTS official guidance

What If You Write Too Little?

Writing below the minimum can leave parts of the task underdeveloped. Make sure you meet the required length while answering every part of the question.

Should You Write as Much as Possible?

No. A much longer answer takes time away from planning, checking, or completing the other task. It can also introduce errors or ideas that do not help your answer. Focus on relevant, well-developed points.

A practical target is about 160–170 words for Task 1 and 270–280 words for Task 2. That gives you a small buffer above the minimum. Use your practice sessions to learn what that length looks like in your own handwriting or typing.

How Can You Estimate Your Word Count?

You may not have time to count every word during the test. Practice using the same answer format you expect to use, and notice roughly how much space your usual 150- or 250-word response takes. On a computer, use the word count displayed in the test interface if available.

How Are Words Counted?

Articles such as a, an, and the count as words. Punctuation does not count on its own. Hyphenated words and contractions are generally treated as single words, so don’t rely on them to make up a large shortfall.

Can You Reuse Words from the Question?

You can reuse individual topic words where they fit. Avoid copying long phrases or full sentences from the prompt. Put the question into your own words and make sure your answer develops it.

The wording changes while the main idea stays the same.

Should You Repeat Yourself to Reach the Minimum?

No. Repeating the same point does not add useful content. If you are short on words, explain one of your ideas more fully or add a relevant example.
