Writing an Effective Essay Introduction

On this page

A clear introduction helps the reader understand the topic, your position, and the reasons you will discuss. Keep it focused on the question. A long, general opening can use up time without helping your argument.

Common Problems

  1. Starting too broadly

Openers such as “Nowadays, many people…” often lead to background statements that do not answer the prompt. Introduce the specific issue instead.

  2. Leaving out your position

If the question asks whether you agree or disagree, state your view clearly.

  3. Not previewing your reasons

Briefly name the main points that support your position. This gives the reader a clear sense of how your essay will develop.

  4. Adding a dramatic hook

A formal essay does not need a surprising claim or an entertaining opening. Start with the issue and move to your argument.

  5. Using an informal tone

Choose clear, appropriate language. Avoid conversational expressions and overly decorative wording.

Example

Question:

Increasing car use contributes to climate change and harms people’s health and well-being. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Focused introduction:

Greater reliance on cars contributes to both climate change and health problems. I agree with this view because vehicle emissions add greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, while traffic pollution can harm people’s health.

This introduction restates the issue, gives a clear opinion, and previews two reasons.

Less effective introduction:

Cars are popular in many places, and more people drive them each year. Some people say cars affect the climate. Climate change and health are major concerns today.

This version gives broad background but does not state the writer’s position or explain the essay’s main reasons.

A Simple Structure

For an opinion essay, include these points:

  1. Restate the question’s main idea in your own words.
  2. Give your position clearly.
  3. Name the main reasons you will explain in the body paragraphs.

Keep the introduction concise. Use the body paragraphs to develop your reasons with explanations and examples.
