How to Write a Discussion Essay

On this page

A discussion essay asks you to explain two viewpoints and give your own opinion. It differs from an agree-or-disagree essay because you need to cover both sides before making your position clear.

Recognize the Question

Look closely at the instructions. These prompts ask for different things:

  • Opinion: “Do you agree or disagree?”
  • Advantages and disadvantages: “Discuss the benefits and drawbacks.”
  • Discussion: “Discuss both views and give your opinion.”

A discussion question usually presents two contrasting views and asks you to address each one. Make sure you also state your own view if the prompt requests it.

A Four-Paragraph Plan

  1. Introduction

    • Restate the topic in your own words.
    • Introduce both viewpoints.
    • State your opinion and briefly preview your reasoning.
  2. Body paragraph one

    • Explain the first viewpoint.
    • Give a reason or example that supports it.
  3. Body paragraph two

    • Explain the other viewpoint.
    • Give a reason or example.
    • Make clear how this view relates to your own position.
  4. Conclusion

    • Summarize both sides.
    • Restate your opinion.

The exact structure can vary with the question. Use a plan that covers every part of the prompt.

Example

Question:

Some people believe classroom technology improves education, while others think it creates problems. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Introduction:

Digital tools have become common in classrooms. Some people value the learning opportunities they provide, while others worry that they can interfere with learning. I believe technology can benefit students when teachers use it to support classroom instruction.

Body paragraph one:

Technology can give students access to a broad range of learning materials. They can look up information, review lessons, and explore topics in more depth. For example, a student who is studying the water cycle could use an interactive diagram to see how evaporation and rainfall work.

Body paragraph two:

However, screens can distract students and reduce opportunities for discussion. If students work alone on devices for most of a lesson, they may have fewer chances to explain their ideas or listen to classmates. Teachers can limit this problem by combining digital activities with group tasks and in-person discussion. For that reason, technology should support teaching rather than replace interaction.

Conclusion:

Classroom technology can widen access to information, but it can also distract students and reduce discussion. Used alongside teacher guidance and group learning, its benefits can outweigh these drawbacks.

Keep Your Essay Clear

Use linking words such as however, for example, and in conclusion when they show how ideas connect. Avoid adding them to every sentence. Too many connectors can make the writing feel forced.

Choose vocabulary for accuracy. You can vary repeated terms with suitable alternatives, but an inaccurate synonym can change your meaning. A repeated word is better than a word that does not fit.

Most of all, answer each part of the question. Explain both views, support your points, and make your own position easy to identify.
