Writing Task 1

Writing About Two Graphs in IELTS Task 1

On this page

Some Task 1 questions include two different charts, such as a pie chart and a table or a bar chart and a line graph. Describe the main features of both visuals, and compare them only when the data supports a useful comparison.

Common Challenges

Including too much data

Two charts can contain many figures. Trying to report every number takes time and makes it harder to summarize.

What to do: Select a few clear features from each chart, such as the highest and lowest values, the main trend, or a notable difference.

Missing the main features

It can be difficult to decide which details matter most.

What to do: Look for visible patterns first. Check for extremes, large changes, and clear similarities or contrasts. The most important features are often easy to spot.

Grouping information poorly

Mixing details from both charts in the same paragraph can make the response difficult to follow.

What to do: Organize the details so each paragraph has a clear focus. One paragraph for each chart is a useful starting point.

Forcing a comparison

Two charts do not always share comparable categories or measurements.

What to do: Compare them only when the relationship is clear. You can also compare data within each chart.

A Possible Structure

Paragraph 1: Introduction

Paraphrase the prompt, combining its descriptions of the two charts if that reads clearly.

Paragraph 2: Overview

Summarize the main features of both charts. Keep this general and save exact figures for the detail paragraphs.

Paragraph 3: Details for chart one

Describe selected data and comparisons.

Paragraph 4: Details for chart two

Describe its key data and any relevant comparisons with the first chart.

Adapt this structure to the visuals. It is a guide, not a fixed sentence count.

Sample Answer

Question: A pie chart shows the main causes of declining agricultural productivity. A table shows how these causes affected three regions during the 1990s.

The pie chart presents the main reasons farmland became less productive, while the table compares the impact across three regions during the 1990s.

The pie chart shows that excessive grazing was the largest cause. The table indicates that Region A had the greatest share of unproductive land, while Region B had the smallest.

Excessive grazing accounted for just over one third of the decline. Tree removal made up nearly one third, while intensive crop use represented slightly more than a quarter.

In the table, almost a quarter of the land in Region A had become less productive. The figures were lower in the other regions: about 5% in Region B and 13% in Region C.

The overview identifies the main patterns without listing figures. The detail paragraphs then support those points with selected data. Use the tense that matches the time period shown, and describe the measurements accurately.
